Anyone who still thinks that birdwatching is the preserve of grey-haired men should think again. Birding has become hip and is growing in popularity among a wide range of people. For evidence of this, look no further than the Wadden Islands Bird Festival held on the Dutch island of Texel each May. This accessible annual event is focussed on birdwatching for a good cause. It attracts enthusiasts from various countries and of all ages.

House Martins still breed in a number of places on Texel. During the summer, the species can be seen regularly on the island as can their characteristic mud nests under the eaves of houses. Nevertheless, House Martins are having a difficult time and for this reason the species has been chosen as the Dutch ‘species of the year 2018’ by Sovon and BirdLife Netherlands.

It is now possible for teams to register for the Texel Big Day on 11 May 2019. 2017, the first Big Day to raise money for charity in the Netherlands was held. The third ever Texel Big Day will take in 2019, and aims to raise money to help some bird into the dunes on Texel. Join in this 24 hour bird race and help support birds on Texel.

On 12 and 13 May 2018, the National Park Dunes of Texel and the Bird Information Centre Texel are organising the third annual Wadden Islands Bird Festival. In order to make this possible we rely on the help of volunteers.
